The famous American entrepreneur Mark Cuban has alerted Google about the hacking of his Gmail account. Cuban recently posted on X, informing Google and its CEO, Sundar Pichai, about a call from a supposed Google staff member telling him someone had hacked his Gmail, leading to him spoofing Google’s recovery methods.
Cuban provided a few details about the hacker’s identity, including his name, Noah, and the phone number he used to place the call. The renowned billionaire used the opportunity to alert the public about the incident, highlighting that any mail for that account after 3:30 pm on June 22 did not originate from him.
Notably, Cuban reported his Gmail happened barely 24 hours after Coin Edition reported about taking over 50 Cent’s X account in a crypto pump-and-dump scheme. In their pattern, the hackers take over prominent personalities’ social media or network accounts and use them to exploit unsuspecting victims.
A common trend for such hackers is impersonating the original account owners and using the hijacked accounts to promote their fraudulent schemes, targeting unsuspecting online users. The targeted users may commonly trust the social capital of the original account owners and follow instructions provided through such accounts based on the personalities’ credibility.
Some hackers could use the stolen accounts for other ulterior, including accessing the owner’s online profiles, aiming to impersonate and steal from them. They could also result in blackmail, making unpermitted posts on behalf of the account owner. Hence, Cuban’s alert on X informed those in charge to help retrieve his Gmail account.
It is worth noting that placing a timeline on the event would enable the public to filter any information emanating from Cuban’s Gmail. Potential victims can differentiate between emails from Cuban and those from the hacker.
